Guess Anime (guessanime.moe) is a real-time multiplayer game where you race to recognize anime openings, endings, and still frames pulled from the videos. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how you can stay in control of it.
Information we collect
When you create an account: your username, email address, and - if you sign up with email/password - a password stored as a salted hash (never in plain text). If you sign in with Google or Discord, we only receive what's needed to create the account (the provider's user ID, your email address, and possibly a display name) - never your password on those platforms.
While you play: your game stats (score, accuracy, XP, level), your friend relationships, and any messages you send in a game's chat. This data is what makes leaderboards, history, and invites work.
Automatically: your IP address is turned into a one-way keyed hash before it's ever stored, used only to spot duplicate accounts and limit abuse (anti-cheat, rate limiting) - we never store your IP address in plain form. A small number of technical cookies keep you signed in and remember your language and theme preference (see Cookies below).
Why we use this data
To create and secure your account, authenticate you, run real-time games, and show your scores, progress, and friends.
To prevent cheating and abuse: rate limiting, detecting duplicate accounts via the hashed IP, and moderating usernames and chat messages.
To send you emails that are strictly necessary for the service: signup confirmation, password resets, and security notices. We never send marketing emails without your explicit consent.
Sharing your data
We do not sell or rent your personal data to anyone.
Your data may be shared with the technical providers strictly necessary to run the service: hosting, transactional email delivery, and - only if you choose to link your account - Google and Discord for authentication.
We may disclose data where required by law, or to protect our rights, safety, or that of our users.
Cookies
A secure, httpOnly session cookie keeps you signed in - it's essential to the service and can't be turned off without logging you out. Two additional technical cookies remember your preferred language and light/dark theme.
We don't use any advertising or third-party tracking cookies.
Data retention
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. You can ask us to delete your account and associated data at any time by contacting us (see Contact) - self-service deletion isn't available from your profile yet, but we handle these requests manually and promptly.
Some data may be kept longer where the law requires it (e.g. fraud prevention), or anonymized instead of deleted where that's enough to protect your privacy (e.g. aggregated leaderboards).
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, and receive a copy of your data, as well as the right to object to certain uses. You can exercise these rights by contacting us.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your country's data protection authority (in France, the CNIL).
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your data (hashed passwords, encrypted connections, revocable access tokens), but no system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your data, we'll notify you as required by applicable law.
Children
This service is not directed at children under 16. If you believe a child has given us personal data, please contact us so we can remove it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Significant changes will be flagged in the app or by email. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated.
